Feeding Guide

The amount of newborn formula you prepare depends on the age of your baby and their individual needs.

Age of BabyCooled Boiled Water (ml) Level Scoops of Powder^ Number of Feeds per day
0-4 days5015-6
5 days-4 weeks10026-8
1-4 months15035-6
4-6 months20044-5
>6 months20043-4

^ 1 Level scoop ≈ 7.5g of powder
1 scoop of powder added to 50mL water yields approximately 56mL of formula. This is a general feeding guide only. Infants may need more or less formula. Newborn babies may not drink the full amount in first weeks. Infants over 6 months should be offered food in addition to infant formula.

DENTAL HYGIENE

Avoid putting your baby to sleep with a bottle, as it can lead to tooth decay.

CUP FEEDING GUIDELINES

Introduce a baby feeding cup at around 6 months of age, to teach your baby the skill of sipping from a cup.

How to Prepare

  1. direction icon
    1.

Always wash hands with soap and water and dry using a clean cloth. Clean the preparation surface thoroughly before preparing a feed.

  2. direction icon
    2.

Clean all feeding equipment in hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Next, sterilise all feeding equipment by submerging bottles, teats and lids in boiling water for 5 minutes, or use an approved steriliser.

  3. direction icon
    3.

Boil safe drinking water and allow to cool for 30 minutes.

  4. direction icon
    4.

Refer to the feeding guide instructions to check how much powder and water is needed.

  5. direction icon
    5.

Use only the enclosed scoop, fill scoop and level off using the built-in leveller on the can. Avoid compacting powder.

  6. direction icon
    6.

Add the exact amount of powder to the water in the bottle. Always add 1 level scoop of powder for each 50mL of water. Cap the bottle and mix thoroughly by shaking gently or swirling the bottle to dissolve the powder.

  7. direction icon
    7.

Check temperature of feed on the inside of your wrist before feeding. It should feel warm, but cool is better than too hot. Feed your baby immediately. Discard any feed that has not been consumed within 1 hour.

Each bottle should be prepared individually and used immediately. If a bottle of made up formula is to be stored prior to use, it must be refrigerated and used within 24 hours. Never use a microwave for any formula preparation or to warm-up feeds.

Where can I get a2 Platinum® Premium infant formula stage 1?

Available in Coles,  Woolworths, Chemist Warehouse and the a2 Store®.

Can you use a stage 1 baby formula after six months of age?

It is completely safe for your baby to continue on a2 Platinum® Premium infant formula (stage 1) beyond 6 months, as your baby is starting on solids. Introducing solid foods provides additional nutrients which will help meet your baby’s nutritional requirements.

If your baby is already settled on a2 Platinum® Premium infant formula (Stage 1), remaining on this may be more beneficial than transitioning to a2 Platinum® Premium follow-on formula (Stage 2), as there are many changes occurring with the introduction of solids, and this can be one aspect that remains the same, allowing you to focus on progressing with introducing a range of solids foods, in particular iron rich foods.

If you find your baby is showing little interest in solid foods, it may be more beneficial to introduce a2 Platinum® Premium follow-on formula (Stage 2).

How long does a2 Platinum® Premium infant formula last once opened?

Once a can of a2 Platinum® Premium infant formula has been opened, it can be kept safely for four weeks if stored in a cool dry place. Discard any unused formula after four weeks.

To maximise the shelf life:

  • Keep the scoop in the can when not in use. There is no need to wash the scoop after preparing a bottle.
  • If the scoop gets wet accidentally, you will need to wash and dry it thoroughly before putting it back in the can.
  • Always keep a2 Platinum® Premium infant formula in its original can and cover with the plastic lid to prevent contamination of the powder.
  • Do not transfer the powder to another container because this is a high risk of contamination.

Supporting Your Family's Feeding Choices

We believe breastfeeding is best to provide ideal nutrition for babies, and other important health benefits. Good nutrition for mums is important throughout pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding. However, we understand breastfeeding may not be an option for everyone. To support you on your feeding journey, we recommend speaking to a healthcare professional. Introducing formula either partially or exclusively may reduce breast milk supply, which isn’t easy to re-establish. It is also important to consider the social and financial impacts of formula, such as potential cost of providing formula until your baby is 12 months old. When using infant formula, always follow the preparation instructions carefully. Improper use can make your baby unwell. Information about our infant formula products is for educational and informational purposes only.
